#1 What This State Means
A broadband light that is off is a different thing from a red light. It means a specific light is not lit, and the sources we checked do not say what that means for the AT&T gateways this page covers: the BGW210-700, the Pace 5268AC and the NVG599. The BGW210 guide documents its Power and Service lights but does not cover a broadband light, and the sources have no legend for the 5268AC or NVG599. AT&T’s restart article lists them as Smart Home Manager compatible, which tells you they are AT&T gateways, not what each light means.
The one “off” state documented in AT&T’s light guide is for the BGW320’s back-panel power light. There, no light means the power is either not connected or there is no power at the wall plug. AT&T’s guide also says that if the front Service light is off but the power light is green, the gateway needs replacing. That is a BGW320 rule, and it does not transfer to the other models.
So this page does not explain a broadband light that is off, and it does not give the DSL settings steps that an earlier draft listed. Those steps are not in the sources we checked. What the sources do support is a simple order of checks: confirm the gateway has power, check the cable, check for an outage, restart once, and then contact AT&T with the model and the light state.
#2 Identify the light and the model
- Find the model on the label. Note whether the gateway is a BGW210, a 5268AC or an NVG599, or a BGW320 if that is what you have.
- Check the power first. Look at whether the gateway has power and whether any light is on at all.
- Note which light is off. Some gateways have several lights. Write down which one is off and which ones are on.
- For a BGW320, use the BGW320 legend. The power light on the back is green when the gateway has power, and no light means no power.
- For the BGW210, check the Service light. AT&T’s guide says that if it is red or off after five minutes, you should power the gateway down. For the other models, use the model’s AT&T support page. The sources we checked do not give their light meanings.
#3 Steps to Troubleshoot
- Check the power. Make sure the power cord is firmly in the gateway and the wall plug, and that the outlet has power. On a BGW320, look for the green power light on the back.
- Check the cable. Look for a loose, disconnected or damaged cable at the wall and at the gateway. Reseat it firmly and watch the lights.
- Check for an outage. Use Smart Home Manager or myAT&T on a mobile device to look for a service problem in your area.
- Restart once. AT&T’s manual restart is to unplug the power cord, wait 20 seconds, and plug it back in. If the gateway has an internal battery backup, follow the restart steps in AT&T’s article for it. Allow up to five minutes to come back online.
- Do not change settings to fix an off light. The sources we checked do not give settings steps for an off broadband light, so do not change configuration until AT&T has checked the gateway.
- Contact AT&T if the light stays off. Give the model, which lights are on and off, whether the internet is working, and what you have already checked.
#4 What If Scenarios
Q: The broadband light is off but the internet works. Is that a problem? The sources do not say what an off broadband light means for these models. If the internet works, check the outage tools and keep an eye on the connection. If it drops, contact AT&T.
Q: The BGW320 power light is off. Is the gateway dead? AT&T says no light on the back-panel power light means the power is either not connected or there is no power at the wall plug. Check the cord and the outlet first. If the power is on and the light stays off, contact AT&T.
Q: The BGW320 front Service light is off but the power light is green. What now? AT&T says that combination means the gateway needs replacing. Contact AT&T rather than resetting it.
Q: Will changing the DSL settings in the admin page turn the light on? The sources we checked do not say so, and this page does not give those steps. Change settings only if AT&T support asks you to, because a wrong change can stop the connection.
Q: Can I reset the gateway to turn the light on? Only by following AT&T’s current reset instructions. AT&T’s documents disagree on the BGW320 reset hold duration, so this page gives no number. A reset removes your Wi-Fi settings, so do not reset until the simpler checks have failed.
