#1 What This State Means
On an AT&T gateway, green can mean several things, and the meaning depends on which light is green and whether it blinks. AT&T’s guide for the BGW320 is the only blinking-green legend in the sources we checked, so the blinking detail on this page applies to that model. AT&T’s BGW210 guide documents only solid green states. The BGW210-700’s guide documents its Power light as green when powered on and its Service light as solid green after setup, but it does not name a blinking green state. For the Pace 5268AC and the NVG599, the sources list them as compatible with Smart Home Manager but do not give their light meanings.
On the BGW320 the green blinks mean three different things. A fast blinking green Service light means the gateway is connected to the network and ready for activation, and AT&T says this happens only during first installation. A slow blinking green WPS light, with the Service light solid white, means the WPS button has been pressed and the Wi-Fi device you are connecting needs action. A fast blinking green WPS light means a factory reset is in progress, and AT&T says to wait while the gateway starts back up.
Solid green is a different case. On the back of the BGW320, solid green on the Ethernet port means a device is linked to that port, and solid green on the power light means the gateway has power. So if you see a steady green light, check which light it is before you decide anything.
#2 Identify which green light you have
| Light and pattern | What AT&T says it means | First step |
|---|---|---|
| Service light, blinking green fast | Connected and ready for activation, during first installation only | Finish activation in the AT&T steps |
| WPS light, blinking green slow, Service light solid white | WPS button pressed, act on the Wi-Fi device | Complete the pairing on the device within the window |
| WPS light, blinking green fast | Factory reset in progress | Wait while it starts back up |
| Ethernet port, solid green | Device linked to that port | None; the link is working |
| Power light, solid green | Gateway has power | None; the power is on |
#3 Steps to Troubleshoot
- Identify the green light. Note whether it is on the front Service light, the WPS light, an Ethernet port or the power light, and whether it is steady or blinking.
- For fast blinking green on the Service light, check whether you are still setting up. AT&T says this state is only for first installation. If the gateway has been set up and still shows it, contact AT&T.
- For slow blinking green on the WPS light, finish the pairing. AT&T says the Wi-Fi device needs action. Complete the pairing on that device.
- For fast blinking green on the WPS light, wait. AT&T says a factory reset is in progress, so do not interrupt it. Wait until the gateway starts back up.
- Check the power and cable if a green light is missing. A missing power light on the back means no power, so check the cord and outlet.
- Restart once if the Service light is blinking and does not settle. Unplug the power cord, wait 20 seconds, and plug it back in. Allow up to five minutes to come back online.
- Contact AT&T if the green light does not match these states. Give the model, the light, its colour and pattern, and what you have already checked.
#4 What If Scenarios
Q: The Service light is blinking green fast on a gateway I set up last year. Is it broken? AT&T says that pattern is only for first installation. If it appears on a gateway that is already set up, contact AT&T so they can check the activation status rather than changing settings.
Q: The WPS light is blinking green. Am I being hacked? The BGW320 guide says slow blinking green on the WPS light, with the Service light solid white, means the WPS button was pressed. Check whether someone in the home pressed it or a device is trying to join. If you cannot account for it, change the Wi-Fi password.
Q: I did not start a factory reset, but the WPS light is blinking green fast. What now? AT&T describes that pattern as a factory reset in progress. Do not interrupt it. Wait until the gateway starts back up, then check the settings. If the light keeps blinking fast after a long wait, contact AT&T.
Q: My gateway is not a BGW320. Does this legend apply? No. The green legend above is from AT&T’s BGW320 guide. For the BGW210, the guide’s solid green Power and Service lights are the only green states it documents. For the Pace 5268AC or NVG599, use that model’s AT&T support page, because the sources we checked do not give their green states.
Q: Can I reset the gateway to clear a green light? Only by following AT&T’s current reset instructions. AT&T’s documents disagree on the BGW320 reset hold duration, so this page gives no number. A reset removes your Wi-Fi settings, so do not reset until the simpler checks have failed.
